THE GOD OF WAR Guan Gong is the most famous general in Chinese history. He was known as being very powerful, skilled and courageous. He lived in a period of Chinese history called “THE THREE KINGDOMS”, some 17 hundreds ago. Guan Gong means “Lord Guan” a title earned through heroic deeds. His actual name was Guan Yre. Guan’s appearance is often depicted as having a red complexion and a long beard. When engaged in battle, he is shown mounted on horseback, holding a unique weapon, a great blade set on the end of a very long pole, which never leaves his side. Guan Gong personifies the virtues of integrity, justice, courage, honour and strength. Other aspects that the Chinese have long admired was the value he placed on friendship, brotherhood and fidelity. The great warrior sought to restore peace for all and to end the misery of the common people. |
